Hi friends! Do you see that?! It's the SUN - and we are all smiles over here at Brigitta Canfield Photography.
Speaking of smiles…One of the questions I get asked the most is “How do you get kids to smile like that?” The truth is, the best photos rarely come from asking kids to stand still and say cheese. The magic usually happens when they're relaxed, having fun, and being themselves.
So today, I thought I'd share a few little tricks you can try the next time you pull out your phone to photograph your own kiddos.
1. Start with happy kids
This one sounds simple, but it makes a huge difference. Try to snap photos when kids are fed, rested, and not rushing out the door. A relaxed afternoon, a slow morning, or even a backyard playtime can be the perfect moment.
2. Turn it into a game
Games are my secret weapon. Instead of asking kids to “smile,” try something playful:
“Hold your brother's hand and let's play Red Light, Green Light!”
“Run to mom and give her the biggest hug you can!”
“Whisper something silly in your sister's ear.”
Those little moments of movement almost always turn into genuine smiles and laughter.
3. Let them move
Kids are not meant to sit still, and honestly, the best photos happen when they don't. Let them spin, run, jump, explore, or cuddle up with you. Movement brings photos to life.
4. Get down on their level
Instead of standing above them, try kneeling or sitting so your camera is right at their eye level. It makes the photo feel much more connected and natural.
5. Don't worry about perfection
Some of my favorite photos are the messy ones—the windblown hair, the giggles, the muddy knees. Those little in-between moments are the ones you'll love the most years from now.
And if you ever want someone else to capture those moments with you in them, I'd love to help with that too.
